Explicit and Implicit Memory in the Elderly: Evidence for Double Dissociation Involving Medial Temporal- and Frontal-Lobe Functions
نویسندگان
چکیده
Groups of normal old people living in institutions or in the community and young adults were administered tests of implicit (IM) and explicit (EM) memory with word-stem (WSC) and word-fragment (WFC) completion paradigms. Neuropsychological tests sensitive to frontal and medial temporal lobe function were also administered. Age differences were observed on both tests of EM and on all neuropsychological tests. Priming effects on WSC were smaller in the institutionalized group than the other 2 groups. Comparisons of EM and IM test results with neuropsychological test scores revealed several effects, including significant correlations (a) between EM scores on both tests and performance on standard memory tests in both aged groups and (b) between IM scores of both aged groups on WSC and frontal-lobe test performance. The results provide evidence of a double dissociation with respect to involvement of brain regions in EM and IM. They also indicate that repetition priming in WSC and WFC involve different mechanisms and that frontal-lobe dysfunction is a factor in reduced priming on the WSC test.

An investigation of implicit memory through left temporal lobectomy for epilepsy.
Temporal lobe epilepsy patients have demonstrated a relative preservation in the integrity of implicit memory procedures. We examined performance in a verbal implicit and explicit memory task in left anterior temporal lobectomy patients (LATL) and healthy normal controls (NCs) while undergoing fMRI. We hypothesized that despite the relative integrity of implicit memory in both the LATL patients...
متن کاملDissociation between Conceptual and Perceptual Implicit Memory: Evidence from Patients with Frontal and Occipital Lobe Lesions
The latest neuroimaging studies about implicit memory (IM) have revealed that different IM types may be processed by different parts of the brain. However, studies have rarely examined what subtypes of IM processes are affected in patients with various brain injuries. Twenty patients with frontal lobe injury, 25 patients with occipital lobe injury, and 29 healthy controls (HC) were recruited fo...
متن کاملMultiple systems of category learning.
We review neuropsychological and neuroimaging evidence for the existence of three qualitatively different categorization systems. These categorization systems are themselves based on three distinct memory systems: working memory (WM), explicit long-term memory (explicit LTM), and implicit long-term memory (implicit LTM). We first contrast categorization based on WM with that based on explicit L...

Memory impairment is one of the main features of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),There are multiple studies in memory impairment and cognitive function such as memory in a variety of explicit memory, implicit, procedural, active, declarative, revermid ,working, visual, false and autobiographical. The methodology of systematic review were, meta-analyzes and controlled studies of sites Med ...
متن کاملDirect and Indirect Timing Functions in Unilateral Hemispheric Lesions
Introduction: The neural substrates of temporal processing are not still fully known. The majority of interval timing studies have dealt with this subject in the context of “Explicit timing” (computing the time intervals explicitly). The hypothesis “Implicit timing” (implicitly using temporal processing to improve function) has also proposed. This lesion study addressed explicit and implicit ti...
